The Sterling College Lady Warriors (3-9, 0-6) fell to the York University Panthers (1-10-1, 1-6) in a rare Friday afternoon match over Homecoming weekend. It was a matchup between two defensive-minded teams. The final score ended up 2-0 in favor of the Panthers when the 90 minutes expired.
There were shots being traded in the first half but neither team was able to gain the advantage. At the half, the score was 0-0, which was expected with the makeup of these two teams. York was leading in shots taken, corner kicks, and fouls at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, York was able to break the tie. With the ball entered to just inside the box on the left side, Riley Gilbert (York) collected the ball, turned and fired to the top corner on the near side, and put the ball right where it needed to be. Shaylee Gibbs shrunk the window as much as she possibly could and the ball ended up just out of reach. This goal was the eventual game-winner in the match. York was able to add a security goal in the 77'.
Sterling returns to action next week when they travel to Avila University to take on the Eagles on Wednesday, October 12, at 1 pm.
